En 1904, el geopolítico británico Halford Makinder elaboró una teoría que consideraba toda la zona de Asia Central y Europa Oriental como el corazón del continente euroasiático y sostenía que el imperio que la domeñara, dominaría el mundo. Hoy Asia Central trata de liberarse controles exteriores y, dueña de sus enormes riquezas naturales, se abre a Europa para contrarrestar la influencia de sus grandes vecinos –Rusia y China– y asimilar el conflictivo reingreso de un Afganistán independiente.
